A renewable buildout forecast exposes the grid bottleneck

What happened

On October 9, 2024, the International Energy Agency released Renewables 2024, an outlook covering electricity, transport, and heat through 2030. Its accompanying news release said the world was set to add more than 5,500 gigawatts of renewable power capacity between 2024 and 2030 under then-current policies and market conditions. The report explicitly examined barriers to faster growth, including system integration and grid connection queues. For a developer or buyer, a large global forecast can obscure the sequence needed to deliver a specific project.
