What happened

The Ethereum Foundation’s February 27, 2024 mainnet announcement set Dencun activation for March 13 at epoch 269568. Its central change was EIP-4844, which introduced temporary data blobs intended to give layer-two rollups a less costly place to post transaction data. The announcement told node operators and stakers to move to compatible client releases. Ethereum.org’s maintained Dencun FAQ subsequently records activation at that epoch and date, while noting that individual rollups had to update their own systems to use blob space. Interpretation

This is an infrastructure case, not a price story. A base-layer change can alter the available input to another service, but application operators still need release management, testing, and monitoring before users experience a difference. Rollup costs also include execution, congestion, and platform choices; cheaper data availability does not guarantee a fixed end-user fee. For teams running nodes, the immediate obligation was compatible software. For rollups, the relevant work was integrating the new transaction type and observing it in production.
