Across 2024, two humanoid robot makers announced four separate arrangements with warehouse and automotive customers, each using different language for what was actually agreed, in the robotics sector this desk tracks. Apptronik and Mercedes-Benz announced what Apptronik called its first publicly announced commercial deployment of Apollo in a 15 March 2024 release, describing Apollo delivering and inspecting kitted parts at a Mercedes-Benz plant. Three months later, Apptronik and GXO Logistics announced a separate, more tentative arrangement.
The evidence
Apptronik's 20 June 2024 release with GXO describes an 'early-stage proof-of-concept program', moving boxes and totes and picking items, with a lab evaluation to precede any distribution-centre deployment on an unspecified timeline - a materially weaker commitment than the Mercedes-Benz 'commercial agreement' announced three months earlier, even though both used the same robot's name. A different maker, Agility Robotics, had already piloted its Digit robot at a GXO-operated SPANX facility from a December 2023 proof-of-concept, then announced in October 2024 what it called a 'historic' multi-year Robot-as-a-Service deployment at a separate GXO site near Atlanta, with the robot said to have started work there on 5 June 2024.
Timeframe and confidence
Every figure here comes from the robot makers' own newsrooms, not from GXO or Mercedes-Benz, and each release uses its own vocabulary for stage of commitment: commercial agreement, proof-of-concept, commercial operations. Company pilot announcements are claims about intent and early results, not verified, sustained deployment, and the strongest language in this set - Agility's 'historic' and 'first' framing for its GXO agreement - is the company's own characterisation of itself, made in a press release rather than demonstrated in a customer disclosure.
What would change the reading
A GXO or Mercedes-Benz statement independently confirming robot counts, uptime, or contract renewal would raise confidence well above a maker's own announcement. A pilot that is quietly not renewed, or a customer that moves to a competing supplier, would be the kind of silent reversal a maker's newsroom is unlikely to announce with equal prominence.

- Did the pilot convert into a renewed or expanded contract, or simply end quietly?
- What was the robot actually doing - a narrow, repeatable task, or the broader warehouse role first described?
Four announcements in a single year produced four different levels of commitment behind similar language. Reading 'pilot' and 'deployment' as interchangeable would flatten a distinction the companies' own releases preserve.
