The SIA release states that the monthly sales data behind this figure 'are compiled by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization,' the industry body that has published regional semiconductor revenue data for four decades according to its own current site, retrieved 16 September 2026 as a living page describing WSTS's ongoing role rather than 2021 specifically. WSTS aggregates revenue reported by member semiconductor companies across the Americas, Europe, Japan, and Asia Pacific into monthly and three-month moving averages, which is the basis SIA then summarises annually. That a record dollar total and a record unit count arrived in the same year the release itself calls a 'shortage' is not a contradiction: dollar sales and units shipped can both rise even while demand for specific components outstrips available supply, because pricing and product mix shift alongside volume.
Timeframe and confidence
The 2021 total is a completed calendar-year figure from an established industry data-compiling body, not a forecast, which supports reasonably high confidence in the number itself. What it does not resolve is whether 2021's shortage reflected a genuine capacity shortfall or elevated ordering by customers trying to secure supply against future uncertainty; the sales total by itself cannot distinguish real end-demand from precautionary over-ordering.
